Workday: AI Reshaping Jobs, Not Cutting Them, as Applicants Per Role Hit 69
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 5, 2026
Workday's October 2026 Global Workforce Report finds that 40% of business leaders expect AI to expand productivity from existing staff, while only 28% anticipate headcount reductions. Demand for basic AI skills fell 25% since January 2026 as employers shift toward candidates who can build and engineer AI tools — a category that saw 51% demand growth. Internal mobility is stalling, with moves falling at 57% of employers, pushing candidates outward and driving median applicants per filled role to 69, up from 58 a year ago. For recruiters, the surge in AI-assisted job applications is inflating pipeline volume without improving candidate quality, while the growing skills gap in AI engineering creates sustained demand for specialized talent sourcing.
