Jacksonville Transportation Authority Plans Sweeping Layoffs, Project Pauses Amid Financial Crisis

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is preparing widespread layoffs affecting staff at all levels — from executives to bus drivers — as it grapples with a $32.8 million projected cost overrun and roughly 59 days of cash on hand. The authority is also considering pausing its NAVI autonomous vehicle program and seeking emergency legislation from the Jacksonville City Council to redirect tens of millions in gas tax revenue. These moves follow prior workforce reductions last fiscal year of 31 layoffs and 88 furloughs, and the resignation of longtime CEO Nat Ford. JTA is expected to formally announce changes Thursday.
