Gap Between Employer Demand and Hiring Widens to Yearly High, ICIMS Reports
HR Dive · United States · Aug 20, 2026
Job applications in the U.S. rose 6% in July while hiring remained flat year over year, creating what ICIMS calls the widest gap between employer demand and hiring activity in 2026, per its latest Workforce Report. The disconnect was sharpest in manufacturing, where openings were up 29% above baseline but hires fell 6% below it — suggesting strong candidate interest is not converting into placements. The manufacturing applicant pool is also trending younger, with under-45 applicants now comprising 85% of the sector's funnel, up from 79% a year ago. For staffing firms, the data signals rising placement opportunity in manufacturing alongside a clear need to improve screening and conversion processes to meet accelerating client demand.
