UVM Medical Center Cuts 199 Positions, Closes Geriatric Units

University of Vermont Health Network is eliminating 199 staff positions — including 118 at UVM Medical Center — as part of a cost-cutting restructuring projected to save $16.8 million annually. The changes include closing a 30-bed general medical unit and a specialized geriatric care program, with 55 new roles created for a net reduction of 144 positions. The closures are raising concerns about care continuity for vulnerable patients who cannot safely leave the hospital but no longer require acute treatment. Staffing firms with healthcare placement practices in Vermont may see increased demand for temporary clinical staff as the health network restructures units.
