Skilled Labor Demand Nearly Doubles as AI Drives Infrastructure Boom, NFPA Survey Finds
HR Dive · United States · Aug 21, 2026
A National Fire Protection Association survey of 326 skilled trades workers finds demand for skilled labor has nearly doubled over the past three years, with roughly a third of respondents citing AI infrastructure buildout as a key driver. The rapid scaling of data centers is pulling trained professionals away from other jobsites, compounding an existing shortage worsened by retiring workers and underdeveloped vocational pipelines. A March Randstad North America report corroborates the trend, noting it now takes longer to hire an HVAC technician or electrician than a software developer. For staffing firms serving trades and technical sectors, the data signals strong placement opportunity alongside intensifying competition for a shrinking candidate pool.
