Data Center Boom Forces Contractors to Rethink Skilled Labor Recruiting and Retention
HR Dive · United States · Aug 28, 2026
The rapid expansion of U.S. data centers is intensifying competition for electricians, pipefitters, plumbers, welders, and other skilled tradespeople, with average hiring time reaching 56 days according to Randstad North America. Major contractors Turner Construction, Clayco, and DPR Construction are moving beyond base pay to offer mobility bonuses, travel stipends, student loan repayment, and formalized 're-recruiting' programs to retain workers on remote and long-duration projects. Panelists emphasized that compensation alone won't win retention, and that building long-term pipelines through apprenticeships, local partnerships, and career development is essential. Staffing firms serving construction, facilities, and skilled trades verticals should expect sustained demand pressure and heightened client expectations around creative compensation packaging.
