LA County Superior Court Offers $35,000 Buyouts to Shrink Staff Amid $88M Budget Deficit

Los Angeles County Superior Court has launched a Voluntary Separation Incentive Program offering eligible full-time employees with at least five years of service a one-time $35,000 buyout to resign by December 24. The court faces an $88 million cumulative funding deficit and is operating at just 76.77% of its calculated funding need — its lowest level since 2021. Vacated positions will be permanently eliminated rather than backfilled, with the program aimed at forestalling layoffs or furloughs in FY2026–2027. Court officials warned the public to expect operational delays as staffing shrinks, signaling reduced demand for legal-sector contract and temp placements in LA County.
