iHire Report: Ghost Jobs and Fake Applicants Erode Hiring Trust in 2026
HR Dive · United States · Oct 1, 2026
iHire's 2026 State of Online Recruiting report, surveying 1,000+ job seekers and 300+ employers, found that 23.6% of employers received at least one fake applicant in the past year, while 39.3% of job seekers cited ghost or fraudulent jobs as their top search problem. Employer frustrations remain dominated by unqualified applications (55.7%) and candidate ghosting (51.6%), mirrored by applicants frustrated by employer non-responses (57.5%). AI use in recruiting has plateaued at 24%, down slightly from 2025, with 44% of applicants now viewing AI-driven hiring negatively. Recruiters should note that the trust breakdown is slowing fill times and driving up unfilled roles, with 27% of open positions going unfilled entirely — signaling increased opportunity for staffing firms that offer hands-on, human-led candidate vetting.
