U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy visited Norfolk International Airport to highlight federal efforts to modernize air traffic control infrastructure and address severe staffing shortages — the Norfolk tower has 17 controllers when it needs 32. To expand the talent pipeline, DOT launched a Gamer Recruitment Program targeting individuals with gaming backgrounds, citing their multitasking and problem-solving skills; Duffy reported the initiative has already drawn more than 2,000 candidates into the ATC pipeline. The visit also highlighted a $27.3 million infrastructure investment at Norfolk International by end of 2028.
