FAA's Gamer Recruiting Campaign Yields Record 2,000+ Air Traffic Controller Hires

The FAA's gamer-focused recruiting campaign, launched in April, has produced record hiring results: more than 2,000 air traffic controllers hired in a single year, with 2,000+ additional candidates in the pipeline and the agency at 94% of its hiring goal. The campaign received 12,350 applications in a single 24-hour window — more than double the previous first-day record — and reduced the overall hiring timeline by over five months. The initiative highlights a broader shift in public-sector recruiting, emphasizing skills-based hiring over traditional degree requirements. Staffing and recruiting professionals can draw lessons from the FAA's targeted outreach to non-traditional candidate pools and its success in dramatically accelerating the hiring process.
