CommonSpirit Health to Lay Off 175+ Workers Across 17 California Hospitals, Nurses Rally in Protest
NewsData.io · United States · Aug 8, 2026
CommonSpirit Health has announced layoffs affecting more than 175 positions across 17 California hospitals, citing rising costs and financial pressures. The cuts span ancillary roles — patient transporters, physical therapy aides, clerks — as well as registered nurses, including pediatric RNs at California Hospital Medical Center. Over 5,000 nurses signed a petition through California Nurses Association/National Nurses United urging CommonSpirit to rescind the plans, warning of patient safety risks. The layoffs signal continued financial strain in the healthcare sector, a key client vertical for many staffing agencies.
