August Jobs Report: 162,000 Hires Beat Forecasts as Wage Growth Slows and AI Displaces Workers
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 4, 2026
U.S. employers added a surprising 162,000 jobs in August, more than doubling forecaster expectations of 65,000, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. Average hourly wages rose just 3.1% year-over-year — the weakest gain since May 2021 — complicating the inflation picture and raising the likelihood of a Fed rate hike at its September 15–16 meeting. For staffing professionals, the report carries mixed signals: labor force participation jumped by 683,000, but the information sector shed 23,000 jobs as AI displaces roles in customer service and software development, a trend recruiters are encountering firsthand. Worker shortages tied to immigration enforcement and boomer retirements continue to tighten the available talent pool.
