AI Has Not Killed Software Engineering Jobs — Legacy System Complexity Is Why
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 11, 2026
Despite fears of an AI-driven 'SaaSpocalypse,' human software engineers remain in demand because AI coding tools are not yet capable of maintaining and updating the complex legacy systems most large enterprises rely on. Major software companies including Salesforce, ServiceNow, Snowflake, and Workday reported strong financial results this summer, with Salesforce shares surging 22% post-earnings after announcing an expanded partnership with Anthropic. For staffing firms, this signals that demand for experienced software and IT maintenance talent remains resilient, even as AI disruption continues to reshape entry-level and greenfield development roles. The wave of software engineer layoffs triggered by early AI coding tools appears to have been premature.
