Washington State Proposes 4.9% Workers' Comp Rate Increase for 2027

Washington's Department of Labor & Industries is proposing a 4.9% average increase in workers' compensation insurance rates for 2027, translating to roughly $1.44 more per week per full-time employee. Employers bear approximately 75% of the premium cost, with workers covering the remaining 25%. The increase is driven by rising medical costs and wage replacement expenses, with L&I drawing on contingency reserves to avoid passing along the full projected cost burden. Final rates are expected to be adopted November 30 and take effect January 1, 2027, giving staffing firms and their clients a narrow window to adjust labor cost projections.
