Unemployment Claims Tick Up to 206,000 but Remain at Historically Low Levels

Initial jobless claims rose slightly to 206,000 last week, staying within the historically low 200,000–230,000 range that has persisted for the past year. While layoffs remain rare, hiring has slowed sharply — employers are adding just 61,000 jobs per month in 2026, far below the 166,000 monthly average seen in 2023–2024. The 'no-hire, no-fire' dynamic means job security is high for existing workers but placement conditions are difficult for candidates seeking new roles. August's jobs report, expected Friday, is forecast to show 65,000 new jobs added and an unemployment rate of 4.2%.
