U.S. Lost 23,000 Jobs in July as Worker Confidence Hits Multi-Year Lows

NewsData.io · United States · Aug 10, 2026

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a net loss of 23,000 jobs in July, well below economist expectations, with local government and hospitality/leisure sectors leading the declines. June's figures were also revised sharply downward from 57,000 to 20,000, and May's estimate was nearly halved to 66,000. A Gallup poll found 63% of Americans now consider it a bad time to find a quality job, up from 45% in January 2025, with the share saying it's a good time falling from 48% to 33%. Tariffs and elevated costs are being cited as key headwinds dampening hiring.
