Technology Employment Grows by 86,000 in August Despite Tech Sector Layoffs
HR Dive · United States · Sep 9, 2026
Despite approximately 14,700 tech company job cuts in August, overall technology occupation employment grew by 86,000 workers, according to CompTIA analysis of BLS data. Nearly 600,000 active technology job postings were recorded in August, with over 320,000 requiring AI-related skills — a 4.5% month-over-month increase. Notably, much of this demand is coming from outside traditional tech sectors, including manufacturing, retail, and administrative services, signaling broad cross-industry opportunity for tech talent placement. Staffing firms focused on technology roles should note the divergence between headline layoff figures and actual hiring demand.
