Tech Layoffs in 2026 Have Already Surpassed All of Last Year's Total

More than 124,000 tech jobs have been eliminated in the first seven months of 2026, exceeding the roughly 122,000 layoffs recorded across all of 2025, according to layoffs.fyi. Oracle, Amazon, Dell, and Meta account for the bulk of the cuts, with AI infrastructure investment, post-pandemic overhiring corrections, and bureaucracy reduction cited as key drivers. Despite the wave of cuts, a PwC analysis across six continents finds that AI-exposed firms are actually adding jobs faster than peers, and San Francisco's unemployment rate has fallen 3.7% this year as AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic continue hiring.
