Recruiters: Health Systems Must Define CAIO Mandate Before Starting Executive Search
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 25, 2026
Healthcare executive recruiters at WittKieffer say health systems must align internally on reporting lines, resources, and expectations before launching a search for a chief AI officer, as the candidate pool remains thin and the role is still evolving. An informal 2024 review found only six of the top 100 health systems had a dedicated CAIO, though that number has grown. Candidates typically come from three pipelines: outside-healthcare AI leaders, healthcare data/analytics executives, and clinical informatics officers. Recruiters caution against treating the CAIO as a 'messiah' hire and emphasize that change management skills are as critical as technical expertise.
