NYC Preschool Funding Gap Leaves CBO Teachers Underpaid, Centers at Risk
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 3, 2026
New York City's community-based preschool operators face an average funding gap of roughly $12,600 per child, causing widespread teacher underpayment and center closures. A 2024 city comptroller's report found 80–90% of pre-K teachers at community-based organizations earn less than public-school counterparts, often by tens of thousands of dollars annually. Since the city's 3K and pre-K rollout, NYC has lost an estimated 1,300 family-run day cares with capacity for nearly 10,000 children. Staffing firms and recruiters serving early childhood education should expect continued candidate supply pressure as low wages and financial instability drive teachers away from the sector.
