Nurse Practitioner Preceptor Shortage Forces Students to Self-Arrange Clinical Placements, Delaying Pipeline
NewsData.io · United States · Aug 25, 2026
A structural mismatch in nurse practitioner training requires students to complete at least 500 supervised clinical hours, but many schools leave students to find their own preceptors — sometimes paying $2,000–$2,500 per rotation through placement companies or tens of thousands directly to supervisors. The NP workforce grew roughly 10% annually from 2016–2023, far outpacing the supply of willing preceptors, which are unpaid by default and increasingly declining due to burnout. Delayed graduations are compressing the already-tight supply of primary care and behavioral health clinicians, particularly in rural markets — a trend staffing agencies serving healthcare clients should track as placement volumes and candidate availability shift.
