New York Overtakes San Francisco in Tech-Talent Headcount as AI Hiring Surges
NewsData.io · United States · Aug 24, 2026
CBRE's 2026 Scoring Tech Talent report finds New York Metro's tech workforce grew by 30,640 to 394,300 between 2022 and 2025, surpassing the San Francisco Bay Area for the first time in the report's 13-year history. AI-skilled tech workers across the U.S. and Canada rose 45% year over year to 751,000, with financial services firms increasingly competing with tech companies for AI talent. Major banks including JPMorgan, Citi, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America are all expanding AI hiring, while layoffs in the high-tech sector have created openings for non-tech employers to build tech teams. For staffing agencies, these geographic and sectoral shifts signal growing placement opportunities in financial services AI roles, particularly in New York and Dallas-Fort Worth.
