Mosaic Lays Off 199 Workers at Florida Phosphate Plant Amid Sulfur Crunch
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 17, 2026
Mosaic is laying off 199 workers at its South Fort Meade, Florida phosphate facility, with the shutdown effective December 8, 2026, per a WARN Act notice filed with state officials. The cuts stem from a global sulfur shortage exacerbated by Middle Eastern conflict and Strait of Hormuz shipping disruptions, which have driven sulfur prices above $1,000 per metric ton. The shutdown follows 206 additional Mosaic layoffs at Louisiana facilities earlier this month. Union bumping rights under the UFCW Local 814C contract may reduce outright job losses for some displaced workers, but the facility is expected to remain idle for more than six months.
