McClatchy, which owns 30 newspapers including The Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee, laid off at least 90 journalists across its publications on September 10, 2026. The cuts included more than a third of the Miami Herald's editorial staff, near-total elimination of El Nuevo Herald's newsroom, and majority layoffs at The Lexington Herald-Leader. The company cited a 41% drop in consumer revenue over five years as the driver, signaling continued contraction in the local news sector.
