McClatchy Cuts Over 90 Unionized Journalists Across 17 Publications in Nationwide Layoff Wave
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 12, 2026
McClatchy eliminated more than 90 unionized journalists across 17 publications nationwide — roughly 30 percent of its NewsGuild-CWA-represented workforce — citing a 41 percent decline in consumer revenue and ongoing AI integration pressures. The Miami Herald alone lost more than 30 editorial positions, about a third of its newsroom, while the Fresno Bee cut up to 40 percent of staff and the Lexington Herald-Leader eliminated the majority of its active reporting roster. The layoffs follow months of labor tensions over AI-generated content tools and come as McClatchy, owned by hedge fund Chatham Asset Management since its 2020 bankruptcy, restructures around content that cannot be easily replicated by competitors. Staffing agencies serving media and journalism clients should note the scale of contraction in local news as a sectoral demand signal.
