Houston ISD May Cut or Reassign Teachers in Enrollment-Driven Budget Review
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 28, 2026
Houston Independent School District is evaluating campus staffing levels against actual 2026-27 enrollment figures, with principals at under-enrolled schools asked to cut staff who may be reassigned to higher-enrollment campuses. The district budgeted for 9,895 teaching positions but had 323 vacancies as of mid-August, down from 10,005 teachers the prior year. HISD has not disclosed the total number of employees expected to be affected. Recruiters placing K-12 educators in the Houston metro should monitor for displaced teachers entering the candidate pool.
