Gen Z Helicopter Parents Calling Hiring Managers, Attending Interviews — Recruiters Report Growing Trend
NewsData.io · United States · Aug 6, 2026
Recruiters and hiring managers are reporting a rise in overbearing parents interfering in their adult children's job searches — calling to challenge hiring decisions, shadowing Zoom interviews, and even applying on behalf of Gen Z candidates. At a recent SHRM conference, more than half of 250 HR professionals raised their hands when asked if a parent had contacted them on behalf of a young employee or candidate. A Zety survey of 1,000 Gen Zers found 20% had a parent accompany them to a job interview. Staffing professionals cite the tight youth job market, pandemic-era socialization gaps, and smartphone-enabled constant contact as contributing factors.
