Federal Task Force Targets 9 Elite Universities in J-1 Visa Fraud Probe
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 8, 2026
A newly formed federal Visa Fraud Strike Team, announced by VP JD Vance and DOL Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito, is investigating nine major universities — including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, and Arizona State — for alleged misuse of J-1 visas in federally funded research positions. Officials allege the schools used J-1 classifications to avoid employment obligations and undercut wages for American graduate students, with the nine universities filling roughly 61% of federally funded research roles via J-1 visas versus a 38% national average. Subpoenas have already been served at all nine institutions. Staffing firms and recruiters placing researchers or technical talent at universities should monitor compliance exposure, as increased federal scrutiny of J-1 and H-1B programs signals a broader crackdown on visa usage in research and academic settings.
