FBI Loses 1,500+ Agents, Counterintelligence Squads at 50–60% Staffing
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 6, 2026
FBI counterintelligence squads across the bureau's 56 field offices are operating at just 50–60% of filled positions, as agents and analysts have been redirected toward violent crime and immigration enforcement under current leadership priorities. The bureau has lost more than 1,500 special agents since President Trump returned to office, with overall headcount down more than 650 from January 2025 levels. Experienced personnel have departed through firings, forced exits, and voluntary resignations, taking years of institutional knowledge with them. Staffing firms supplying cleared or law-enforcement-adjacent talent, and recruiters tracking federal workforce reductions, should note the significant ongoing drain of experienced federal agents entering the private labor market.
