DOJ Charges 14 in North Korean IT Worker Fraud Hitting 70+ U.S. Firms
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 13, 2026
The Justice Department announced coordinated enforcement actions against North Korean remote IT worker schemes that infiltrated more than 70 U.S. companies across healthcare, communications, retail, and manufacturing sectors, generating approximately $3 million in fraudulent revenue. Fourteen individuals were charged, two U.S.-based facilitators arrested, and roughly 187 devices seized across 40+ suspected 'laptop farms' in Texas under Operation Lonestar Roundup. DPRK workers used stolen identities, VPNs, and U.S. facilitators to pose as domestic remote employees and funnel earnings to sanctioned North Korean entities. Staffing firms and employers are urged to tighten remote hiring verification practices, as the FBI issued a public service announcement with specific mitigation guidance for companies screening remote IT candidates.
