CDC Workforce Down 30% as Cuts and Political Pressure Gut Agency Capacity
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 26, 2026
The CDC has lost roughly 30% of its workforce since early 2025, dropping from 9,279 employees in March 2025 to 6,683 by May 2026, according to data compiled by former federal scientists. Entire units covering smoking, sexual violence, child abuse, and senior falls have been shut down, while infectious disease and chronic disease divisions face severe staffing reductions. For staffing firms with government, public health, or life sciences clients, the hollowing-out of a major federal agency signals reduced demand from federal contracting channels and potential downstream disruption to state health partnerships. Congress has mandated staffing sufficiency in a recent spending bill but provided no enforcement mechanism.
