California AI Employment Laws Take Effect Jan. 2027: Key Rules for Hiring and Termination
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 12, 2026
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two AI-in-employment bills — SB 947 ('No Robo Bosses Act') and SB 951 — that take effect January 1, 2027. SB 947 bars employers from relying solely on automated decision systems (ADS) for discipline or termination, requires human corroboration, and mandates written post-use notices to affected employees. SB 951 expands Cal/WARN to require employers to disclose when mass layoffs are caused in whole or in substantial part by AI or automation, including the specific technology involved. Staffing firms operating in California must audit their AI-driven screening, discipline, and termination workflows now to ensure human review is embedded before the compliance deadline.
