Austin Fire Department Races to Fill ~100 Vacancies Amid Hiring Crunch
NewsData.io · United States · Oct 6, 2026
The Austin Fire Department must hire nearly 100 firefighters by October 2027 to support a new labor contract that shortens average workweeks from 53 to 49.8 hours. The city is funding 54 new positions, but roughly 40 additional vacancies remain open. Division Chief Mark Bridges noted a nationwide decline in applicant pools — positions that once drew 4,000–5,000 candidates now attract only 1,000–1,500. Staffing firms specializing in public safety or municipal recruitment may find opportunity here, as fire departments nationally struggle to attract candidates at the same volumes as prior decades.
