Arizona Puts $5M Into Special Education Teacher Apprenticeship Pipeline
NewsData.io · United States · Sep 30, 2026
Arizona is deploying a $5 million federal grant over five years to expand its Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program, with a focus on special education certification. The program allows paraprofessionals and other school employees to earn teaching credentials while remaining employed, addressing both financial barriers and a documented statewide shortage — including 533 special education teachers who did not renew certificates for 2024-25. The program currently serves over 90 apprentices with a 97% retention rate and doubled enrollment in the past year. Staffing firms and recruiters serving K-12 or special education markets should note the grow-your-own pipeline model as an indicator of ongoing qualified-candidate scarcity in this segment.
