AI Video Interviews Trigger Candidate Embellishment, But Transparency Can Curb It, Study Finds

A University of Georgia study published in Information Systems Research found that job candidates significantly increase deceptive embellishments when they know their one-way video interviews will be scored by AI rather than a human reviewer. Critically, the AI rating systems tested could not distinguish between candidates who exaggerated and those who gave authentic answers, while human evaluators could. Researchers found that disclosing specific details about how the AI evaluates responses — such as facial expressions, keywords, and competency dimensions — brought candidate authenticity back to levels seen in human-reviewed interviews, offering a practical takeaway for firms deploying AI screening tools.
