AI Speeds Sourcing but Recruiters Still Manually Vet Candidates: TestGorilla
HR Dive · United States · Oct 16, 2026
A TestGorilla survey of more than 1,400 U.S. talent professionals found that while 72% say AI has made finding candidates faster, one-third of those reported no gain in candidate confidence and 18% said confidence actually fell. Recruiters are compensating by manually verifying credentials, with more than two-thirds spending at least an hour per candidate on checks and 30% spending two hours or more. The findings come as applications per hire have tripled since 2021, with open roles averaging 300 applicants according to Ashby. For staffing firms, the data underscores a growing gap between AI-driven sourcing volume and the defensible shortlists clients expect — and suggests investment in skills verification or assessment tools may be the next competitive differentiator.
