AI Is Creating Skill Mismatches and Title Chaos in Tech Job Market, Andela Finds
HR Dive · United States · Sep 17, 2026
An Andela analysis of nearly 50,000 engineering job postings found that AI is fragmenting and blurring tech role definitions faster than employers can articulate them, with more than half of AI/ML engineer postings conflating skill sets from multiple roles. The study identifies emerging hybrid roles — such as 'LLM application engineer' and 'FinOps reliability engineer' — that companies struggle to define or hire for accurately. Andela's head of research warns that employers are placing candidates in mismatched roles due to poorly constructed job descriptions, accumulating what he calls 'talent debt.' For staffing firms placing tech talent, this signals both a sourcing challenge and an opportunity to help clients better define requirements before opening requisitions.
