US Economy Unexpectedly Lost 23,000 Jobs in July; Wage Growth Hits Five-Year Low
NewsData.io · United States · Aug 7, 2026
The July 2026 BLS jobs report showed the US economy lost 23,000 jobs — well below the expected gain of 95,000 — with the unemployment rate dipping to 4.1% only as more workers exited the labor force. Outside of healthcare, which added roughly 22,600 jobs, cyclical hiring was nearly flat, underscoring a deeply uneven market. Average hourly earnings rose just 0.1% month-over-month, dropping the annual wage growth rate to 3.2%, a five-year low that trails inflation of 3.5%. Staffing agencies should expect continued suppressed placement volume, cautious client hiring behavior, and growing difficulty placing candidates in non-healthcare sectors.
